Friday (21st June) saw the 2nd Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport Workplace Challenge Business Games at Charnwood College. Businesses across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland were invited to compete across a variety of sporting contests in order to be crowned the 2013 Business Games Champion.
The event invited workplaces to get active, fit and healthy through friendly games of dodgeball, volleyball, rounders and a host of sporting challenges. These included boxing, rowing, cycling and golf. Businesses were keen to step up to the mark and this was reflected in the maximum number of 16 teams (double the total of last year's competition) taking part to try and claim the coveted trophy and in turn, bragging rights for the county.
Winners of last year's competition, Ashmount School, were back to defend their title. Teams gearing up to challenge the Champions included: British Military Fitness (x2), Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport, Leicester Royal Physiotherapy, Loughborough College (x2), Ashmount School, Coach Unlimited, Harborough District Council (x2), Energy Technology Institute, Lancaster School, Legacy Officers, Charnwood Borough Council, Moat College and Fusion Lifestyle. Each team wanted to take home the coveted crown, so competition was fierce and pride was at stake.
With the rain holding off, the event got off a storming start with some high-class sporting action on display as the teams showed how much this meant to them. The banter never eased up as teams showcased their talent and they should all be congratulated on their spirit, respect, and sportsmanship that they all demonstrated. But beneath all of the laughter, the final result was never far from team's thoughts.
The Legacy Wizards managed to conjure up a magical overall victory as they managed to take home the crown with Coach Unlimited claiming 2nd and Lancaster School 3rd.
The dodgeball competition was organised by Enderby Dodgeball club, who did an amazing job of running the games, from officiating through to motivating all of the teams that took part. There was plenty of dodging, ducking, dipping, diving and… dodging, but once the last man/woman was standing, the winning "dodgers" were Moat Community College, followed by Fusion Lifestyle in 2nd (second) and Loughborough College in 3rd (third). The winners were awarded with the Business Games: Dodgeball title 2013.
The rounders competition was delivered by Rounders England and they were bowled over by the talent shown by the businesses! In perhaps the tightest result of the night, Coach Unlimited pipped the Legacy Wizards to the title on runs scored after both teams went undefeated in their respective random robins. 3rd place was claimed by Lancaster School.
The Legacy Wizards managed to go one better in the volleyball as they served, spiked, set and smashed their way to a deserved victory. Ashmount School and Lancaster School finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Sitting Volleyball Experience Team was on hand to kindly organise the competition and ensure that it ran smoothly.
In between the team sports, individuals were invited to compete in several different sporting challenges over 30 seconds. These included boxing, in which participants were challenged as to how many punches they could throw in 30 seconds (won by Huw - BMF1) with 81 punches and Lucy from Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport with 79 punches) Rowing, to challenge how far they could row in 30 seconds (won by James from Loughborough College with 197m and Hannah from Lancaster School with 139m). Golf putting (won by Sabrina from Team Physio and Adam from Lockington). Cycling (won by James from Loughborough College with 506m and Danielle from Fusion Lifestyle with 442m) and an Illinois Agility Test (won by Jack from Fusion Lifestyle with 15.71 secs and Danielle from Fusion Lifestyle with 16.81 secs). All activities were supported by local clubs and NGBs including Shepshed Amateur Boxing Club, England Golf, British Cycling, Canoe England and Mark Waters Active Fitness.
